“Is my child ready for basketball?” It’s the question we hear most from parents of young kids. If they’re between 5 and 8 and keen to run around with a ball, the answer is almost always yes, and Redback Rookies is where to start.
What it is
Rookies is our introductory program for children who haven’t played before, or who aren’t quite ready for a full team. No experience is needed, and there’s no scoreboard.
Our Term 4 group started on Monday 12 October and runs for 10 weeks, every Monday from 4 to 4:45pm at Warrandyte Sports Complex.
What a session looks like
Experienced coaches take the group through the basics, a little more each week:
- dribbling and ball handling
- passing and catching
- shooting, at the right height
- simple games that teach teamwork
It’s 45 minutes of moving, laughing and learning. Shy and first-time players are welcome: the games are built so everyone gets plenty of turns with the ball.
What to bring
Sneakers, comfortable clothes and a named drink bottle. There’s no uniform for Rookies.
After Rookies
When they’re ready for a team, Rookies move up to the Redbacks in the EDJBA on Saturdays. Our guide for new families walks you through age groups and registering.
Places for each term are booked on PlayHQ. Find out more about Redback Rookies.
